Welcome to the Autumn Permablitz newsletter!
It’s all ramping-up Blitzers! Check out the latest news about upcoming Permablitzes: how to do your own backyard Permablitz; get involved in a community blitz, urban orchard and food co-ops as well as catch-up on all the latest news from the Sydney permacommunity and Friends of the Earth.
This year our focus will be on supporting and facilitating private owner and tenants to invite their neigbours over and run their own blitzes with the support of some of our friends from local Permaculture groups. If you haven’t already, check out the resources on the Permablitz ning site www.permablitz.ning.com or join our Facebook group.
Our big goals are to put some pressure on council to conduct entire street Permablitzes; Get more community gardens happening; support community groups to get involved with Permaculture; work more closely with Food Coops and get as many people as possible access to locally grown, free organic food - hurrah!
Meeting this Tuesday
All welcome!

Permablitz breaks the 7km city zone and is headed to Maroubra!
Exciting news for a blitz coming up on the horizon - the Maroubra Blitz! Kimberley has convinced all the people in her block of 6 flats to support the conversion of common property into productive vegetable and fruit production. FoESyd Permablitz will be helping facilitate the organising of the blitz from the initial design to helping get together resources on the day.
Will keep you posted with the details so you can come along and pitch-in or see how it all works if you’re keen to organise something similar in your community.
Urban Orchard
Sick of the smell of rotting fruit? Are your worms getting too fat from uneaten parsley which is going nuts out the back? Never fear, you can swap the extra food you have in your garden for the extra food in someone elses at Urban Orchard.
Find Urban Orchard at the DIY markets in Newtown on the last Saturday of the month and bring what you have and swap it for what you haven’t.
Last Saturday’s Urban Orchard inlcluded fresh parslet, sage, basil, marjoram. There was also pak choy, rocket, fresh pistachios and jam - it was lovely to meet some people there, and we look forward to seeing you at the next - mark it in your diaries!
International Composting Awareness Week 3-9 May - no really...it exists!
International Composting Awareness Week (Sunday 3rd to Saturday 9th May 2009) is a week of activities, events and publicity to improve awareness about the importance of this valuable organic resource and to promote compost use, knowledge and products.
Approximately 60% of the rubbish Australians put in the everyday mixed-waste ‘garbage bin’ could be put to better use in the garden as compost and mulch or could be returned to agricultural land to improve soil quality.

Save Yeoman’s Farm
Yeomans' unique, world-class Keyline (landscape and dam) farming system is currently under major threat by a proposed housing development (at 108 Grose Vale Road) in North Richmond.
The community of North Richmond and surrounding areas of the Hawkesbury have major concerns about a proposed development at 108 Grose Vale Road, North Richmond. The proposal is for an initial Seniors Living development followed by land rezoning for residential use, effectively creating a residential precinct more than twice the size of the current township.
Sign the community petition and write to council, go to: http://www.nrdcaa.blogspot.com/
~~~ Michelle Obama: Beneath the Asphalt, the Community Garden!* ~~~
Two weeks ago the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, opened a community garden at US Department of Agriculture headquarters, sending a message that it's now time for people to once again start growing their own food.
Permaculture co-originator David Holmgren said "For me this is one of the most exciting news items in 30 years."
* thanks to the Victorian crew for this one!
